5 DAYS / INDEPENDENT FILMS / RED CARPET STUDIO FILMS / PREMIERES EVENTS + AFTER PARTIES / CULINARY CINEMA / COMPELLING PANELS / SALUTE TO VETERANS / INDUSTRY TRIBUTE AWARDS GALA

Greetings and welcome to 2024 Coronado Island Film Festival!

The Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF) welcomes makers and lovers of film from all over the world to the storied seaside village of Coronado, California to celebrate the magical art of visual storytelling. Coronado’s enduring love affair with Hollywood began more than a century ago at the iconic Hotel del Coronado, our festival’s Presenting Sponsor. Launched in 2016, CIFF quickly established itself as a unique, walkable, destination film festival.

Come across the sweeping blue bridge from downtown San Diego and discover for yourself our small, beautiful waterfront paradise, where filmmaking pioneers came in the early 1900’s to the now-world-famous Hotel del Coronado to experiment with a revolutionary new art form that would one day change the world; where the Duchess of Windsor watched polo matches when she lived here as a Navy wife; where Naval Aviation was born and Navy SEALS train and films are made about them; where our beaches always make the top 10 list; where a public School of the Arts was founded in 1996 to nurture emerging talent and became a national model; where our thriving, pedestrian-friendly main street is lined with unique shops, galleries, and restaurants for every mood, including a 1940’s diner, European bistros, and everything else from a perfect burger to 4-star-worthy fare; where legendary luminaries like Charlie Chaplin, Errol Flynn, Marilyn Monroe, Tom Cruise, Geena Davis, Richard Dreyfuss, Emma Stone and hundreds of others still to this day come to work and play; and where eight years ago a film festival was officially launched to celebrate the best and brightest of it all! That’s us!

We showcase films of every genre selected by an esteemed jury of industry pros, made with passion and persistence by filmmakers at every level of the craft, from gifted students to talented newcomers to Oscar winners, who take part in panels, workshops, special presentations and more; and we roll out the red carpet for the grand Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Gala, where the stars indeed do shine on Saturday night.

Come join us; we’ll welcome you with open arms!

Mushka: Tribute Honoree - Renown Disney Animator Andreas Deja

MUSHKA tells the story of the Ukrainian girl Sarah who raises a Siberian tiger during the 1970s. She calls him Mushka, when she discovers an “M” shaped birthmark on the tiger cub’s forehead. The word Mushka is a Russian term of endearment, like sweetheart.

As the tiger grows into adulthood, Sarah finds out that a few shady people in the village plan to kill and sell him for profit.  In an effort to save him she takes Mushka deep into the forest to the same spot where she found him as an orphaned cub. Sarah hopes that her tiger will stay in the forest and learn how to be a wild animal, far away from any humans.

The story’s theme can be summed up like this: Having to let go of someone you love is the hardest thing, but life has a way to provide hope and happiness again.

MUSHKA is an original story by Andreas Deja. The hand drawn animated film was in production for about 10 years. The art direction was inspired by Disney’s classic 101 Dalmatians. Disney legend and Academy Award winner Richard Sherman wrote a musical theme as well as a song for the film.
